How does a proofreader work with you?
If you’ve never worked with a professional proofreader, we hope this will give you an idea of how we work and the value we offer.
A proofreader can check your business documents and web sites for spelling, punctuation and grammar, and see that all amendments and updates have been made as you instructed.
Before we start work, our proofreaders establish whether you have a 'house style' for written material and proofread according to this. Some people prefer heavy punctuation, while some prefer a light touch. Because language changes so fast, the rules change too. We aim to proofread so that your text is understood by your intended audience.
What document formats do we proofread?
As most documents are produced electronically, we proofread mainly from computer files, although you can send us printed copies if you prefer.
Receiving computer files by email enables us to respond to deadlines fast, as we can annotate the files and return them by email, reducing time wasted by post or couriers.
We can proofread Word documents and can amend them using the 'track changes' feature so that you can see the changes we recommend and approve or reject them yourself.
We can also proofread PDF files and annotate them with notes in Adobe Acrobat, which you can read and action.
We aim to proofread as thoroughly as possible, while achieving a quick turnaround to meet your deadlines. We also guarantee complete confidentiality when proofreading your material.
What do we check?
Our proofreaders check:
- spelling, punctuation and grammar
- consistency in use of capitals, names, common phrases, or other elements of your house style
- consistency of design elements
- accuracy of data transferred from a source document to the finished file
- page, section and paragraph numbering
- indexing
We proofread every type of business document. Generally we do not proofread academic texts.
A freelance proofreader as and when you require
We can provide proofreading as part of a wider service - such as editing a magazine - or we can work on an ad hoc or freelance basis. This offers considerable flexibility as you can call on us for a freelance proofreader as and when you need our services.
From our offices in Berkshire and Devon we provide freelance proofreading to clients in the South East (including London and the Thames Valley), the South West (including Bath, Bristol and Exeter) and throughout the UK.
