| VAT |
Value Added Tax is a UK tax levied on many goods and services, usually at the rate of 17.5% of their value. Businesses with an annual turnover above a specified limit must register with HM Customs & Excise so that they can apply VAT on all their sales. The business collects the tax and pays it to HM Customs & Excise on a regular basis. A registered business can claim back most of the VAT it has paid on its own purchases. |

| Venture capital |
Venture (or risk) capital is made available by investors to young companies predicted to achieve strong financial growth, in exchange for a shareholding. |
| Virus |
A software program that has been designed to disrupt the operations of a computer. Viruses are usually concealed so that they transfer from one computer to another without users knowing. Some viruses are so disruptive they can destroy all the information on a computer and make it unusable, while others are intended for humour (although probably not the user's). Viruses are usually spread by removable media, such as diskettes, or can download themselves unseen from the internet. There is a range of virus protection software to guard against and neutralise viruses. |
